How To Protect Every Part Of Your Body From The Chlorine In Swimming Pools

Hair – Apply light oil or leave-in conditioner on your hair and soak your hair with fresh water before you step into the pool. When you saturate your hair with fresh water and have an oily barrier around, absorption of the chlorinated water is minimum. Skin – Similar science works for your skin as well. Apply a sunscreen and take a shower in fresh water before you jump in a pool. Saturating your skin cells beforehand will minimise the chlorinated water being absorbed by your skin.

Hair – Keep your hair in a swimming cap if possible; this will protect your hair from the sun as well as the chlorinated water. Skin – Make sure you do not apply any oil before you hit the pool. Oil has a tendency to tan your skin when in the sun.

Hair – Shower immediately after getting out of the pool with a mild shampoo and apply a leave in conditioner afterwards. Do not rub your hair dry, pat it and allow it to air dry. Avoid using heat styling equipment on your hair, not even a blow dryer as the pool water would have made you hair dry and further subjecting it to heat will damage it more. Skin – You do not want the pool water to dry on your skin, leaving behind a residue that will further irritate your skin. Shower immediately with a mild body cleanser and pat your skin dry. Apply a moisturiser immediately. Nails – Your nails tend to become dry and brittle when exposed to swimming pool water for long periods of time. Make sure you keep your nails and the skin around it moisturised (you can use a cuticle oil overnight). Avoid using harsh nail polish removers and always use a base coat before painting your nails.
