01You are layering your products wrong
The reason why some products can feel like they are sitting on your face and even shed in tiny, greasy bobbles, has to do with improper layering. These rubbery flakes can be a result of using thicker formulas in the wrong order. For instance, going in with a thick moisturiser early in the routine can stop other lighter products from getting absorbed. There are a few rules to follow when applying your skincare products. Start with your most watery products like toners and serums. Then use the thicker ones like moisturisers and oil, and lastly follow it up with sunscreen. Also, always apply water-based products before oil-based ones because the oil will block the water from penetrating into the skin.
02You are going too fast
If you are not following the right order, you might be following the wrong timing. Rushing your skincare routine ( going in with a product before the previous one is properly absorbed and dry), can make the product flake off. The skin can only absorb so much product in a limited amount of time; so you must be careful about the quantity.
03You are not exfoliating
There is a reason why it is recommended to exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. The dead skin cells can pile up on your skin and flake off. The physical action of rubbing a product on your face can make the oils present in them mix with flaky dead skin and ball up. Ensure that you are exfoliating at least twice a week to avoid these gunky balls while applying your skincare.
04Some ingredients are more prone to pilling
One of the most common and widely used ingredients prone to pilling in skincare is silicone. This ingredient sits on the skin's surface to lock in moisture and gives it a shiny appearance. So, do a label check and cut out silicones from your routine if you notice your skincare pilling.
05You are being too harsh
If you are in the habit of rubbing in your skincare too harshly, the intense friction can lead to pilling. Pat (don't rub) your skincare products — that's all you need to do to make your products absorb. If they are not being absorbed by the patting action, you are using too much or just the wrong kind of formula for your skin type.
