There's something about a long, luxurious shower that is so relaxing! Had a stressful day? Head for a shower. Need some me-time? Shower it is. Dealing with a breakup? You guessed it. Shower time is sacred — it doesn't differentiate. So what if we told you that there's a trend that takes your 'everyday' shower and raises it up a few notches, making it the ultimate 'everything shower routine' your body, mind, and soul needs. Yes it's the ultimate me-time session. Think of this as an indulgent once a week or once in two weeks self-care escape that focuses on not only rejuvenating and detoxing your hair and skin, but also leaves you feeling entirely relaxed. It gives you the experience of a spa at the comfort of your home. "The everything shower trend is a self-care trend that became viral for including dedicated days, may be once in a week, where you use all bath, shower, and skincare essentials," explains Dr Varshini Reddy, The Glow Clinic. "The routine can range from an hour to a few hours, to that indulge your body and mind." Now is the perfect time to dive into this shower ritual. Here's your guide to doing the everything shower trend right this season!
01Step 1: Start By Setting The Mood
Kickstart your everything shower routine by bringing out some aromatherapy candles to set the vibe! Think spa, but at the comfort of your home. Just be careful to place the candle or incense in a safe space to avoid any fire hazards. Add some soft music to add to the vibe, if you'd like!
02Step 2: Add In Your Hair Oil
Once the mood is set, make sure to apply a nourishing hair oil on to your scalp and hair. Massage the oil in for a few minutes and then let it sit for about 20-30 minutes, depending on your hair type.
03Step 3: Give Yourself A Lymphatic Drainage Massage
While you wait for your hair to work its magic, it's time to move on to your body in your everything shower routine. "Start with a pre-cleanse ritual of giving you body a full body massage with a warm oil," recommends Dr Reddy. "This practice of abhyanga has roots in Ayurvedic tradition and various oils can be used for different sensorial experience and concerns." A pre-cleanse massage helps drain away the toxins in the body, reducing any sort of puffiness. Alternatively, you can also gently dry brush your body to help stimulate blood flow and exfoliate any dead skin cells. "Taking a shower with a mild ubtan or weekly scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells is highly recommended and smoothens skin texture," the expert adds. However, remember not to over exfoliate your skin as this may cause irritation and sensitivity, and can dry out your skin even further.
04Step 4: Throw In A Hair Scrub
Hair oil worked it's magic? It's time to rinse it off! When doing so, use an exfoliating hair scrub that will help remove any product buildup, dirt, excess sebum, and other impurities from your scalp. This gives it an intense detox — an essential in your everything shower routine. Love, Beauty, Planet Tea Tree Oil & Peppermint Scalp Scrub
05Step 5: Opt For A Nourishing Shampoo-Conditioner Duo
The idea of the everything shower routine when it comes to your hair is to deeply cleanse and detox your scalp while moisturising and hydrating the lengths of your mane. Dr Reddy, however, advises not washing your hair more than twice or thrice a week, unless there is a scalp concern like dandruff at play. "It can strip your hair of essential moisture," she says. Therefore, it's best to reserve one of your hair wash days in the week, for your extensive shower routine. Tresemmé Detox & Restore Shampoo Tresemmé Detox & Restore Conditioner
06Step 6: Slather On Your Hair Mask
No hair care routine is complete without a deep-conditioning hair mask for dry hair! A hair mask, especially during this season helps provide your hair with the ultimate nourishment which protects hair from frizz, dryness, breakage, and so much more. It truly adds life to your locks. Look for deep conditioners with argan, rosemary, hibiscus, or almond oil. 07Step 7: Focus On Your Body
It's now time to cleanse your body! For this Dr Reddy recommends using a creamy body wash or an oil-based shower gel that will help deeply hydrate the skin and prevent dryness. If you skipped the dry brushing session at the start and are looking for very mild exfoliation (apt for sensitive skin), we recommend using a body wash that doubles up as a gentle exfoliator too. The formulas often contain ingredients like AHAs or BHAs, that help gently slough the dead skin cells away, without causing any sort of irritation. 08Step 8: Post Shower Care
It's time to lock in all the goodness from your everything shower routine with a body lotion for dry skin! "Remember to use more skincare products that contain shea and cocoa butter, almond and jojoba oil. Switch to more hydrating and emollient-based products that include squalane, ceramides, peptide, urea, and hyaluronic acid," she recommends. In case you are stepping out, apply a creamy body lotion that contains an SPF, as it'll protect the skin from UV rays while providing a moisturising layer that'll sustain through this weather. Pro Tip:
Apply your body moisturiser when the skin is slightly damp, as this helps the creamy formula absorb into the skin even better.
09Be Mindful About
-
Over-exfoliation — while it may seem tempting to go at it, over-exfoliating your skin can damage your skin barrier and result in dryness and irritation. Always be gentle.
-
Hot water — While a hot shower can feel relaxing, it's not always the best choice for your skin. High temperatures can strip away natural oils, leaving the skin dry and dehydrated—something we all want to avoid.
-
Always do your face skincare last! Why? The ingredients from your hair care products can leave a residue on your skin, which can clog pores. The order goes, hair–body-then face!
Phew! The Everything shower routine is intense, but it also brings along a fun element of self-care to your routine. Whether you're doing it for the practical benefits or to relax your mind, either way, this viral trend is a great way to slide into the season, don't you think?
